Education, strengthand light from the north.

Lapland is home, and its voice must be heard where Finland's decisions are made.

Noora Nampajärvi · PhD · Senior Lecturer · Researcher
About me

Teacher, researcher and
advocate for the north.

I am Noora Nampajärvi, a mother from Rovaniemi, doctor of philosophy, and a teacher of history and social studies. My roots run deep in eastern Lapland. I have worked in schools for over twenty years and reflected with young people on how society works and how to have an impact.

In my research I have examined how the history of Lapland and the Sámi people is represented in education. I am now running for parliament on the Centre Party list in the Lapland constituency.

As a teacher, I see how societal decisions become part of the everyday lives of children, young people, and families. I want to defend education and the Nordic welfare state, and renew them for the needs of our time. In politics, I value evidence-based knowledge, cooperation, and understanding the consequences of decisions.

In my free time you will find me on the ski track, at the crossfit gym, reading, or at the piano. Nature is an important source of strength for me, and I often hike on the fells and in the forests. I love fishing and berry-picking.

My campaign themes

What I work
to achieve

I want Lapland to be a place where people can trust in the future. That requires good education, functioning services and employment, and an understanding of northern conditions in decision-making.

Education and learning

Quality education belongs to every child and young person. I defend local schools, adequate learning support, and the opportunity to study in the north. Education also requires libraries, culture, independent research, and a free press.

Services close to people

Health and social services must be accessible even across Lapland's long distances. Scaling back service networks must not be the default solution. The effects of centralisation must be assessed from the perspective of everyday life. A saving is not real if the costs are transferred to travel, families, or care needed later.

Vitality through work and entrepreneurship

People in Lapland must be able to find employment, run businesses, and build a future. Companies need skilled workers, predictable taxation, and functioning transport and communications connections. The benefits of investments must also be visible as local jobs and municipal vitality.

Living countryside and strong primary production

Farming, forestry, reindeer herding and fishing provide work and income and strengthen self-sufficiency. Their future requires long-term political commitment.

Income and equality

Work must provide a living, and support must be available when one's own resources fall short. I stand for the Nordic welfare state.

Nature and responsible use of natural resources

Lapland's nature has intrinsic value and is also the foundation of many livelihoods. Our Arctic natural resources must be used carefully and sustainably.

"Seen from Helsinki, Lapland may look distant. Seen from here, the only thing that looks distant is decision-making."Noora Nampajärvi
Doctoral dissertation · 2026

Whose history is
taught in schools?

In my doctoral dissertation I examined how the local and Sámi history of Lapland is represented in primary school curricula and history teaching. The material consisted of 17 local curricula and eight teacher interviews. The research showed that how the region's own history is covered depends heavily on individual teachers' expertise and choices. Teaching is also hampered by a lack of materials and tensions related to Sámi identity.

Schools make choices about whose past becomes familiar and whose is left out. Knowing the history of one's own home region helps us understand where we come from and how current society has been built.

The history of Lapland and the Sámi people is also part of Finland's shared history. Teaching about Lapland and Sámi history must be supported by curricula, teacher education, and learning materials.

Writings and perspectives

On education, society
and the future of Lapland.

I write about things I encounter as a teacher, researcher, and a person from Lapland: education, justice, and the opportunity to build a future in the north. Here is a selection of my opinion pieces published in Lapin Kansa.

Maahanmuutosta keskusteltava

Maahanmuutosta tarvitaan keskustelua, jossa erilaiset tilanteet erotetaan toisistaan ja väitteitä arvioidaan tosiasioiden pohjalta. Ihmisarvon kunnioittaminen kuuluu myös vaikeista kysymyksistä käytävään keskusteluun.
